This Women’s History Month, in light of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movement, the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, and the current political climate, expect femvertising to be at an all-time high. But for 14 years, one company has advocated for female empowerment year-round. Etsy is the global marketplace for unique and creative goods and the self-described “home to a universe of special, extraordinary items, from unique handcrafted pieces to vintage treasures.” With $3.9 billion in annual sales Etsy.com is also one of the world’s largest communities of female entrepreneurs- according to the organization 87% of their entrepreneurs are women.

Etsy believes in investing in services that fuel their sellers’ success and attributes the company’s success to “keeping commerce human.” Millennial women see success on the platform; the global median age of an Etsy seller is 38% of their sellers are one-woman organizations, and 97% operate out of the home. Presumably these women are working in a home environment that sets them up for success, and as a result, they are happier, feel more valued and are more productive.

Alycia Maskiew, the owner of Etsy shop AskYoMother, describes her experience as an Etsy entrepreneur:

“It all started with a sewing machine and the passion to do something all my own. I was working at a job I didn’t love and so badly wanted to be my own boss. Ask Yo Mother started in 2016 when I was gifted a sewing machine and the possibilities seemed endless.”

Nadia Warda, the owner of Etsy shop CocoandClay, is honored to bring knowledge of traditional skin care to millennial women:

“In 2012 I mixed my first 100% natural face mask with the ingredients and after a few weeks my complexion improved considerably. To this day all my formulas are still created and tested by me.”
