Leni Schwendinger is an IWEC Past Awardee.

“Nighttime, an existing and inevitable condition, affects half the time a public space can be used. Yet it is frequently neglected in the design, planning and outreach processes, disregarding multiple opportunities for community, commerce and connection.

This paradox underlies the vision I look forward to sharing with you.

During my tenure at Arup, the NightSeeing™ program evolved into a comprehensive approach for re-imagining the urban nighttime experience through the practice of nighttime design.

Here, catalyzed by imaginative illumination, we address public space access to increase safety; provide inspiring environments for active lifestyles, walking and social interaction; and finally, develop after-dark open hours, cultural events and nighttime venues to boost economic vitality.

Employing smart and artistic strategies, I look forward to consulting with city agencies, urbanists, think-tanks, academics, and those who wish to address the “other” 12 hours through interdisciplinary means.
