IWEC Past Awardee Leni Schwendinger’s Night Seeing Updates

Greetings Colleagues and Friends,

While traveling in Europe, United Kingdom and the Americas, working, lecturing and learning from people like you, 2017 has been especially meaningful for fresh design, research and business approaches. As 2018 commences, let us create opportunities for strategic — and creative — urban lighting to humanize city nights.

New York City Transit Authority desired to counteract the dim, worn-out atmosphere of our century-old system. I was involved in the initial envisioning process with Grimshaw Architects, followed by the highly focused, in-depth challenge to design illumination which would perceptually “raise the roof” of the compressed underground experience. The design team endeavored to provide an atmosphere of crisp passageways, and to complement physical attributes such as new finishes, public art, glass balustrades and other upgrades — visible and invisible. A tremendous design-build effort has provided refreshed identity, visual comfort and better wayfinding, among other amenities to calm the rush of New Yorkers’ everyday life.
